How to Flirt with a Hellhound by Shannon Mae - Book Review
Toby
Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but the hot guy next door totally gives off serial killer vibes. Why else would he know how long it takes to bleed out from a wound? Yeah, ok, so I asked, but it was research. Being an author definitely makes for some odd questions (someone had better clear my browser history when I die, that’s all I’m saying). It’s not like I’m stalking my hot neighbor or anything—there’s nothing wrong with watching him out my window. Although I might have my own stalker (and not the cute harmless kind), which is kind of terrifying. Even if he isn’t a serial killer, maybe my seriously sexy neighbor whose eyes seem to glow red (a trick of the light, I’m sure) can help me out.
Can I just say this book was such a roller coaster!! I mean this in the best way.. When I got the recommendation for this book in kindle unlimited I thought "ok, I love shifter books but haven't read a hellhound book before... should be interesting", and oh boy was it ever!! I did not put this book down once I got started. I was absolutely here for the ride! Evil people.. check, hellhounds sniffing souls.. check, cute authors with morbid fascination.. check! This book had it all. Now let's get in to the details! Dislikes, Likes and who I recommend this for.
Dislikes:
NONE! Is that even possible??? It has been about a month since I finished this book and looking back I can't think of anything I didn't like. Was the hellhound love interest a little possessive?? Yes! Was the love story a little insta?? Yes! Are those tropes I usually dislike? Also yes! But Shannon Mae really did this story so well that I wasn't bothered by the tropes that would usually have me pulling my hair. SO, instead of tropes I will discuss some trigger warnings... stalking, talk of gory violence, SOME on page gory violence. This book won't be for everyone, but if the above doesn't cause any discomfort, you should be ok!
Likes:
The characters! Oh they were so well written. The author with is quirky fascination for violent ways to maim someone that he didn't even realize he should be more freaked out by his neighbour who new explicit details on how to carry it out. A hellhound shifter with a hell of a nose who spent his days seeking out the scum of the earth and finding ways to rid the world of them. The witch barista who has a pension for saving lost souls... and of course the hellhound brothers who each had their own distinct personalities. The characters alone in this book kept me engaged even without the exciting, edge of your seat, story-line that kept you gripped!
Who would I recommend this for:
If the trigger warnings didn't scare you off then I would recommend this for those who like their romance with a side of action and fantasy. Shifter lovers will certainly get a kick out of this, as this story is truly unique to the many other shifter stories I have read. It is the first book in a standalone series so there will also be more to come!
