Books of the Month: October Wrap Up
Hello Everyone and thank you for joining me on what is a very gloomy (here in Canada) Halloween day! Happy Halloween to all those who love this day!
Today I am bringing you my October wrap up.. It has been a busy month and thank you for joining me along the way as I being my journey into book blogging. I have been loving it so much so far, the community of fellow book lovers and authors is truly something to be proud to be a part of!!!
So let's get this started!
Books I am currently Reading:
You'll find that I usually read 2 to 3 books at a time.. not beacuse I am particularly skilled in the reading department I just read 1 physical book, I listen to another on audio and I generally have a manga series going as they are much shorter reads for me.
So currently I am reading Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa I am only about 50 or so pages in but so far it is intriguing. It is a fantasy filled with Japanese lore that speaks of a legend that every Millennium whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers holds the power to call on a Great Dragon and that will usher in a new era. It is filled with monks, samurai, kitsune (foxes or more specifically in this story fox gods) and monsters. If any of that sounds interesting pick it up and read along with me!!
I am listening to Mortal Engines and have gotten about 80% through so almost done (most likely will have a review up Friday or Saturday this week). This world is so fascinating and I can honestly say I didn't love the movie. I felt it didn't deep dive into the world like I hoped which left me feeling a bit unattached to the struggles of the characters. So my hope was that the books would give me the more that I wanted and it has so far. This book is sort of a mash-up of dystopian and steam punk and cities roll around on wheels consuming other cities. If that premise is intriguing you'll most likely want to give this a read!!
The manga series I am currently devouring is 20th Century Boys. I just finished volume 7 and have volumes 8 - 10 at the ready. This manga series deals with cults, end of world, everyday heroes and more. As boys, Kenji and his friends came up with a bunch of stories about an evil organization bent on world destruction. As adults, someone is now turning their fantasies into reality. It is good story telling and you get to visually see the happenings in this world. I have been loving it so far!
Books I Read this Month:
I got through 7 books this month (it was a great reading month all 4 or 5 stars) and have reviews for them all so I will list them out below along with my rating, you can click on the titles to see my spoiler free review with some room for spoiler discussion at the end (lots of warning).
20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa - Vol 5-7 (4 - 5 out 5 stars)
The Book of M by Peng Shepherd (5 out of 5 stars)
Our Dried Voices by Greg Hickey (4 out of 5 stars)
Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan (4 out of 5 stars)
Walking to Aldebaran by Adrian Tchaikovsky (5 out of 5 stars)
DNF'd 2 Books/Series
Oh the dreaded Did Not Finish lol. I will be doing a separate blog post on this as these books aren't bad I just read them so long ago (2012) that I couldn't quite get back into them and with such a large TBR shelf I figured it was best to move on for now. I will say my plan is to do a DNF poll every 4-6 months and ask my lovely readers to join in by picking a book (or series) that they think I really should push through and finish. The 2 series I DNFd this month were Partials Sequence and Dustlands these are both YA distopian series. As I said I will do another blog post on these and talk about their premises and who I think would love these novels and should pick them up!
Book Club for December
I have joined in the Big Ass Book Club started by Cass on Goodreads (she has a youtube channel that I follow... check her out!! What Cass Read) this book club is there to help those who want to tackle large page count books (predominantly fantasy) and want people to read along and discuss the books with. Every month they do a poll to determine the next book. So far it looks like The Priory of the Orange Tree is going to win for December and since that is on my books I want to read list I am thinking I will join in as long as I can get all of my November reads completed to have the whole month dedicated to that book. It is about 848 pages. Which brings me to...
November To Be Read Sneak Peek
Tomorrow my November TBR list will go up on the blog!! I have about 7 books I would like to get completed by end of month including finishing my 2 current reads! My most anticipated book is Scythe by Neal Shusterman cannot wait to get to it!!
But what about you.. How did your October go with reading (and in general)?? Did you read as much as you wanted, did you have a good reading month as far as ratings? And what are your November reads plan?? Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear from you!!
